Skills Store Media Release
30/11/2006
LINK Employment & Training has been chosen to manage a Skills Store in the South Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne. Announced on the 26th October by Lyn Kosky the Minister responsible for Education & Training said "The Skills Stores are a Government initiative to make it easier for Victorians to find out about trades and training".

"People sometimes give up on the idea of training because they don't know where to start.

Skills Stores will ensure that each person is accessed for prior learning and experience so that they can get credits, reducing the time required in their future training program.

"Many different institutions offer vocational education and training - schools, TAFE's government - appointed private organisations and universities and neighbourhood houses.

"Trained staff in the Skills Store will be able to help people navigate around the diverse educational sector to find the best option for them.

"Both young people and mature workers will benefit from face-to face advice on the best course to gain employment, advance in their career or consider a career change.

"The south-eastern suburbs Skills Store will operate out of the shop fronts in Dandenong and Frankston and is expected to be up and running by next June.

"Skills Store staff will also operate a mobile advice and referral service from a number of public locations including shopping centres, in areas such as Berwick, Pakenham, Rosebud and Hastings."

Ms Kosky said the Skills Store staff would assess the existing skills of each person and detail what training was available and how to link skills to jobs.

"The staff would suggest planned pathways for future training and employment, and provide an initial assessment of how prior learning, such as former courses and school qualifications, can count towards new qualifications."

Ms Kosky said the Bracks Government was continuing to make significant investment in boosting the skills of Victoria's workforce.
